Project Description: Windows-PAM should be available under the GPL
We currently have a Windows-port of PAM under development.
As it turns out, this is far from trivial to do right.
PAM is the Pluggable Authentication Modules system for SunOS, Linux and most
other flavours of Unix. It allows a great degree of control to the
administrator, who can pick from piles of free modules to setup user
sessions just as he sees fit in his situation.
Porting PAM to Windows is highly desirable and we have undertaken this task on behalf of the many that will benefit from it. We are planning to release the code under the same two licenses as originally used for Linux-PAM, namely BSD-style and GPL.
The problem with the GPL is that it is often hijacked by companies who do not care to read licenses. We want to avoid having to charge such companies in court (we prefer development chores over sueing activities) so what we do is have prospective customers see only the non-GNU version first.
Freedom of Windows-PAM as it applies to Linux-PAM.
Self-managed authentication on Windows desktops.
OpenFortress Digital signatures
- The port is almost complete.
- Waiting for user experiences that may improve Windows-PAM.
- Pending until closed-source authentication module providers pickup the BSD-styled version.
- OpenFortress Digital signatures, 100% funding.
We currently hold the GNU-licensed version. We expect to open it around the end of 2005.
